AI Visibility Consulting
45% of customers now use AI to find businesses. But AI can't recommend what it can't see. Right now, 98.8% of businesses aren't visible to AI. We help ensure yours isn't one of them.
Most small business websites are built with tools like Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, or Hostinger. And why not? They're easy to use and they create great-looking sites. This is not a criticism of those platforms.
But most of them share a structural characteristic that creates a problem many business owners don't know exists. These platforms deliver content through JavaScript, which runs in a visitor's browser after the page loads. That works perfectly for human visitors. But AI crawlers like the ones used by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini don't execute JavaScript the way a browser does. They read what the server delivers directly. For most small business websites built on no-code platforms, that's very little.
You may have heard two common reassurances. First: "AI uses Google and Bing to search, so if you rank there, AI can find you." Second: "Just add an llms.txt file and AI can read your business information." Both are partially true. Both are missing the point.
Being in an index means AI knows your website exists. It does not mean AI can read what your business does. And an llms.txt file tells AI what to believe about you. But AI models verify claims by following the links in that file. If those pages are JavaScript-rendered shells, the verification fails. A claim without corroboration is not a recommendation. It is a rumor.
This doesn't mean your website needs to be rebuilt. It means the information AI needs to understand and trust your business must be accessible and verifiable. Sometimes the fix is a schema markup update. Sometimes it's a static page alongside your existing site. Sometimes it's a more significant infrastructure change. The audit tells you which situation you're actually in, so you're never doing more than you need to.
The Cognant Systems AI Visibility Audit examines every layer of your digital presence: the technical infrastructure AI uses to read your site, the structured data that tells AI what you do and who you serve, and the consistency of your identity across platforms that AI uses to verify your credibility. We deliver a complete picture of where you stand and a clear, proportionate roadmap for what to do next.
Most businesses only operate at Layer 1. The gap between Layer 1 and Layer 3 is where your next customer is being lost.
Layer 1: Find
AI crawlers must be able to reach and read your website. JavaScript-rendered sites, Cloudflare blocking defaults, robots.txt misconfigurations, and hosting provider settings can all make your site completely invisible to AI, even if it ranks well on Google. This is the infrastructure layer.
Layer 2: Understand
Once AI can access your site, can it accurately describe your business? Vague service descriptions, missing schema markup, inconsistent NAP data across platforms, and generic positioning all reduce AI confidence. Low confidence means no recommendation, even when you are found.
Layer 3: Trust
The final layer is whether the evidence about your business supports what you claim. AI cross-references your website against your reviews, your directory listings, your social profiles, and third-party mentions. Inconsistency is a trust failure. Coherence is a competitive advantage.
One of the most counterintuitive findings in AI visibility research is that specificity outperforms breadth. Businesses that clearly define what they specialize in, and signal that specialization consistently across their website, directories, and reviews, are far more likely to be surfaced by AI when a user asks for exactly that thing. It may feel like narrowing your audience. In practice, it expands your relevance to the people who are actually looking for what you do best. If you're known for a specific thing, and a competitor isn't, AI will find you first. Our audit examines how clearly and consistently your specialization comes through at every layer.
Every engagement starts with an audit. We find the problem first, then we tell you exactly what to do about it.

Susan Burris, Founder, Cognant Systems
Susan Burris spent two decades at the intersection of finance, publishing, and technology, working with institutions where decisions had to be right before they moved. That discipline, taking the time to fully understand a system before recommending action, is the foundation of every Cognant Systems engagement.
A systems-oriented thinker, Susan tends to spot patterns early. When AI began reshaping how people find businesses, she recognized that many businesses were invisible to these systems, and that specificity would become essential for being understood and matched.
Cognant Systems exists to address that shift. Not by selling tools or tactics, but by giving business owners a clear, honest picture of how their business is being interpreted by AI and what needs to change.
The audit methodology is grounded in real-world testing, including an internal audit of Cognant's own website, which revealed a complete AI visibility failure despite strong traditional SEO performance. That experience is documented in the white paper series below, and it is the reason this audit exists.
Cognancy is the philosophy that guides how we work with AI: not as a replacement for human judgment, but as a collaborator that extends it. Every audit, every recommendation, and every strategy session reflects a human expert who understands the system, not a tool running a checklist.
